As you might guess by its name, Woodbury, CT-based CompuWeigh specializes in computerized weighing systems for the grain industry. What you may not know is that the company was incorporated in 1978, when it introduced the first computerized legal-for-trade bulk weighing system for the grain industry in response to rapid growth in grain handling volume and train sizes.
“Myself and two partners started a company – B&R Systems and Controls – in 1968 focusing on bulk weighing systems,” recalls company Founder and President Hal Ecke. “And then in 1978, when we started a new company, we had to come up with a new name. At that time, technology was changing pretty fast, and data-collection was really coming into play. I came up with the the name to fit that environment. It’s really computer weighing, so we came up with ‘CompuWeigh,’” he explains.
Product Lineup
Today, the company is an industry leader in automated truck scale and flow meter data collection systems, outdoor ticket printers, intercom systems featuring noise cancellation, bulk weigh and process hopper scales and related control systems, facility automation, computerized bin inventory software as well as the software allowing for logistical tracking of railcars and barges across the country.
Recently, CompuWeigh introduced a touch-screen driver data collection terminal designed to help customers comply with the new FSMA regulations.
Since its founding, Ecke says, CompuWeigh has remained a dominant player in scale control for the grain industry by providing more than 60% of all the bulk weighing control systems in the United States. It also sells its products across the globe from China to Russia to South America.
