Sensat contains first new active ingredient in 20 years

In April, Bayer Crop Science introduced Sensat™, a residual insecticide for application directly to stored grain.

According to Bayer Food Safety Manager Gordon Morrison, Sensat contains spinosad, a novel active ingredient derived through fermentation of a naturally occurring soil bacterium. It’s one of the only insecticides, he adds, available for on-grain protection that’s classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as reduced risk.

“Spinosad is a novel, biological active ingredient that is derived through fermentation of a naturally-occurring soil bacterium, and is the first new active ingredient for the stored grain industry in 20 years,” he says. “Sensat is effective against a broad range of pests, including those that have developed resistance to other insecticides.”

Ideal Rotational Product

“There are very few insecticides available for grain protection, and because Sensat is a different class of chemistry, it’s an ideal rotational product to help combat resistance,” adds Morrison. “Sensat is mixed with water and can be applied to the entire grain column or applied as a top dressing to the top four inches.”
