MODERNIZING AND IMPROVING BULK HANDLING SYSTEMS FOR THE GRAIN INDUSTRY

Reprinted from Grain Journal November/December 2017 Issue

The old adage, “necessity is the mother of invention,” is as true today as it’s ever been. When there’s a gap or need in the market, forward-thinking companies like Pennsylvania-based LCDM (L Cubed Design and Manufacturing), a leading bulk handling solutions provider, step in to modernize existing systems and improve products and processes for customers.

Grain Journal recently spoke with Jeff Fortuna, vice president at LCDM, to learn more about how the company continues to innovate to better serve the grain industry.

Company History

LCDM was formed in 2014 as a division of L Cubed Corporation, which was founded through a 39-year agriculture millwright company called TAM Systems that recognized the need for improved design and engineering of grain flow components.

“Our focus was to take a stagnant part of the grain industry and make it tech savvy and more grain friendly for the user,” says Fortuna. “Our overall goal was to design and manufacture products that improved grain quality and flow efficiency.”

Cubed Corporation and its employee owners are heavily focused on its agricultural roots and staff many second- and third-generation farmers as employees. Today, LCDM employs 10 to 15 full- and part-time employees between its headquarters in Dillsburg, PA and distribution center in Larwill, IN.

Products and Services

LCDM offers many solutions to the bulk handling industry, and its primary focus is to help customers with grain system design – no matter how simple or difficult the challenge may be.

According to Fortuna, the company takes pride and appreciation in enhancing existing product designs by offering modern 3D design, engineering, and fabrication techniques. LCDM offers in-house 3D design support for its customers, and with multiple people trained in SolidWorks software, it makes visualizing customers’ ideas simple.

“We have integrated SolidWorks design software to ensure that all parts are right the first time and every time throughout the manufacturing cycle,” Fortuna explains. “With the integration of SolidWorks, we can maximize programming efficiency of the CNC lasers and brake presses to maintain accuracy in all applications for a better fit and less welding.”

One example of that is the company’s patented, in-house-design DBAR Cushion Box. LCDM’s cushion box is designed to reduce and, at times, eliminate grain damage.

In 2017, the company introduced its PatchWorx instant repair patch, which is designed to patch small holes quickly and easily in grain bins, elevator trunking, spouts, metal buildings, and more.

Fortuna says Patchworx hardens like steel after curing for five to 10 minutes.

What’s New

“The heart of LCDM’s inventory is used for grain handling, but we have recently tapped into a broader bulk handling equipment market. We don’t turn down much of anything,” Fortuna says.

LCDM always is adding to its product line and trying to improve on existing and future designs to help the bulk handing market.

“In 2018 we plan to market our in-house design capabilities,” Fortuna says. “This past year, we worked with a large engineering and contracting firm to help facilitate their designs and construction needs. LCDM was contracted to field measure and design over 200 transitions in an abandoned granary turned into a new malting facility. We were able to design and manufacture all of these parts per the customer specifications and even give suggestions to help them stay under budget,” he recalls.

LCDM also works with grain producers of all sizes. From the small farmer to the big commercial elevators, the company is able to be a field and design support structure – a point that Fortuna says differentiates LCDM from the competition. “Our main competitors only offer the final product. We are able to work with the customer throughout the whole design, manufacturing, and field installation process.”

Company Vision

At the end of the day, LCDM is not just a company that sells grain handling products, according to Fortuna. Rather, the company prides itself on quality, quick, and friendly service.

“The vision of LCDM is to be the company with the most modern, up-to-date technology, which in turn helps our customers with their day to day business,” Fortuna says.

He adds that LCDM’s success ultimately can be attributed to its loyal customer base. “LCDM strives to create honest business relationships with its current and new customers, and we believe that success has come from the will to get the job done, no matter the circumstances.”
