Start-to-Finish Material Handling Manufacturer for Nearly 75 Years

Reprinted from Grain Journal May/June 2019

History

Creamer Metal Products has been family owned and operated since 1946 when it was founded by Kermit Creamer. The company was established in Madison County, OH and has been dedicated to manufacturing high-quality grain handing products for nearly 75 years, thanks to a customer request early in the company’s history that led it down a path to today.

“Originally, the company was geared toward the HVAC industry doing sheet metal work,” recalls Sales Manager Chris Ansel. “In that respect, it started out very small. But then a local coop brought over drawings for a bucket elevator, and that’s how the company became involved in the grain industry.”

Ansel, who has been with the company since 2003, says the company’s founder was regarded as an extraordinary kind of gentleman who saw opportunity everywhere. “He never really backed away from anything. If he thought he could make it, the company produced it,” says Ansel, who notes that Creamer dabbled in a number of side projects, including restoring antique cars and even building an airplane.

In the early days, the company supplied material handling equipment to the grain industry and began to grow as its needs changed – from manufacturing legs and distributors to eventually screw and drag conveyors. Ansel points out that during the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, as the elevators grew, so did the size of the equipment the company produced. “In the 1970s, big legs were 3,000 bph. Things have grown tremendously over the years,” recalls Ansel.

In 2013, the Sims family purchased the company, continuing local ownership, and today, the company employs 25 people at its headquarters in London, OH.

Philosophy

“We can handle that” was Kermit Creamer’s motto, says Sales Manager Chris Ansel. “The day I began working at Creamer, they instilled in me this philosophy that the company is willing to attempt to solve anything for its customers. It’s an attitude that has set us apart from the competition in many ways.

“Some companies offer either a 100-foot or 110-foot standard dimension product, but if you want something that is 103-feet and 4.5 inches, you’re out of luck,” he continues. “But that’s kind of our niche: We love custom projects. We love solving problems that other companies won’t touch.”

According to Ansel, another differentiator for Creamer is that it remains a small, family-owned business, which many of its customers appreciate. “Customers may need to talk to three or four different people at larger companies before reaching the right person who can help them. Being a smaller-sized business enables Creamer to establish personal relationships with customers and provide them with the service they need more efficiently,” he explains.

“Our service is just much more personal. We can adapt to the customer’s situation and needs. We can change or customize different things.”

Products

Creamer Metal Products is best known for manufacturing bucket elevators, drag chain conveyors, and distributors for the grain industry. Its line of material handling equipment includes:

Bucket elevators – designed with galvanized or stainless steel in capacities up to 50,000 bph. Available features include lifting eyes, lined head covers, discharge side lagging, dust-tight design, bolted construction, heavy-duty boot sections, unified trunking, large platforms, hot-dipped safety cage, and ladders.

Distributors – designed to be weather- and dust-tight and available in galvanized steel, stainless steel, or painted. All models include service doors, staggered and flanged outlets, pre-installed electric controls, lining, and heavy-duty and lined turnhead spouting.

Conveyors – available in capacities from 1,500 to 50,000 bph. Features include 1/4-inch and 10-gauge AR liner packages, and 8-gauge head and tail sections with durable take-ups. Models include: flat en-masse, force-flow drag, and 15-degree inclines.

“Bucket elevators are our top product,” says Ansel “We’re also getting more into tube conveyors, which we call the Grain Line conveyor, and we offer a total loop system now as well.”

In 2017, Creamer introduced its GGR grain loop conveyor, which is designed to handle more abrasive material. According to Ansel, the GGR grain loop conveyor features extra-large center wells; Acme take-ups; the ability to fill, unload, blend, and transfer grain gently; easy maintenance; and the option for vertical or leaning orientation. “It is available in diameters from 6 to 16 inches and in capacities from 1,500 to 18,000 bph,” he adds.
