Rowana Umbarger was a paralegal in Indianapolis, IN when she married Marty Umbarger in 1983 and 10 years later joined his family’s business, Roy Umbarger & Sons, Inc., which is now in its fourth generation.
Twenty-seven years later, Rowana is chief financial officer whose responsibilities include managing the company’s business and financial records.
One of those duties in 2016 included switching the company’s software provider to AgVision.
“I had worked with two other software vendors,” Rowana recalls, “and I had frustrations with them. I did some research, and AgVision had software that was specialized for agribusinesses, which is not something a lot of software companies have.”
Rowana spoke to others who recommended AgVision highly and tried the software in a demonstration. “It was simple to use and had all the functions we needed for our business,” Rowana notes. “Agribusiness is a fairly specialized niche, so we needed software that could meet that niche.”
Roy Umbarger & Sons manufactures feed for all types of show animals. It also has a grain division that purchases corn and soybeans from local farmers and an agronomy division that sells seed and provides custom applications of fertilizer and chemicals. The company has a dealer network that covers 27 states and is building a new feed mill in Franklin, IN.
Rowanna says the company uses a number of AgVision’s software programs to help manage the different divisions, including commodity manager, fertilizer manager, feed manufacturing, custom feed mixing, and financial software for accounting needs, such as accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and inventory management.
“The modules interact so everything flows through the general ledger for financial statements,” she states.
AgVision’s customer service is excellent, Rowana adds. “They are very responsive to us. Every time I call, I get an immediate response. I’m very, very happy with AgVision.”
HISTORY – Roy Umbarger & Sons was founded in the summer of 1939 by Roy Umbarger, who had been a feed salesman for a major feed company.
Roy and his wife, Cecile, and their young son, Walter, moved to the small rural town of Bargersville, IN, 25 miles south of Indianapolis, and began Roy Umbarger & Son, a feed business Roy had always dreamed of starting.
After Roy suddenly died in June 1947, Walter and his wife, Jackie, took over the business. He retired in 1985 and passed the company on to his sons, Marty and Tom. When Marty’s son, Jackson, bought Tom’s share of the company, he became the fourth generation to participate in the family business.
